3 Stocks to Avoid This Week

Image
Key Points Fastenal reports quarterly results on Wednesday. An analyst downgrade on Friday suggests it won't be a good report. Renren shares soared 75% last week. A step back for the Chinese growth stock is warranted. Robinhood is another rough week away from becoming a broken IPO. I've been picking stocks to avoid every week, and I fared pretty well last time. My  three stocks to avoid  last week were on the move -- up 3%, down 16%, and flat -- averaging out to a 3.3% decrease. The  S&P 500  rose 0.8% for the week, a relative victory for me and my bearish calls. I have come out ahead in 12 of the past 16 weeks. Let's see if I can keep going. This week I see  Fastenal  ( NASDAQ:FAST ) ,  Renren   ( NYSE:RENN ) , and  Robinhood Markets  ( NASDAQ:HOOD )  as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week. Fastenal We're heading into earnings season, and one of the more p...

NFT trading volume hit $10.7 billion last quarter—here are 2 reasons why people are spending thousands on digital assets

Image
NFT, or nonfungible token, trading volume surged in the third quarter of 2021 to $10.67 billion,  a report  by analytics platform DappRadar found. That’s a 704% increase from the previous quarter. August, in particular, fueled this growth. It was a record-breaking month, according to DappRadar, with over $5.2 billion in trading volume. Though things cooled off slightly in September, it still accounted for over $4 billion in trading volume. This massive spike is the result of several factors, DappRadar found, which tie into two key reasons people are spending hundreds – and sometimes millions – on NFTs. 1. Belief in the tech First and foremost, NFT investors see long-term value in them and believe they will appreciate it over time. NFTs are digital assets and can be anything online, such as  art ,  collectibles , and  even memes . Certain projects are considered rare, like  CryptoPunks , which was one of the first NFT projects. CryptoPunks are highly re...

Coinbase CEO and John McAfee push privacy coins: Monero rises 5%

Image
Monero (XMR)  has just captured more than 5% gains in the last 24 hours to reach $58.57—its highest value since late November 2019. Monero is one of the most popular privacy coins for making anonymous cryptocurrency payments. Monero's recent bullish momentum may have been caused by recent comments made by John McAfee, who slammed Bitcoin (BTC) in a recent tweet while praising newer blockchains that offer privacy features—like Monero. This opinion appears to have been somewhat echoed by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who  argued  that at least one privacy coin is due for mainstream adoption this year. He said, "I believe we’ll eventually see a “privacy coin” or blockchain with built-in privacy features get mainstream adoption in the 2020s." Like practically the entire cryptocurrency market, Monero began seeing significant gains on January 2 and has now appreciated by more than 30% in the last week. This recent bullish activity breaks a more than six-month-long bearish trend...

Bitcoin And Ethereum Surge: New Highs By The End Of 2021?

Image
Bitcoin breaks above short-term technical resistance Ethereum heads for a challenge of the $4000 level Volatility is the norm The factors supporting new highs The reasons for caution Trading cryptocurrencies is like riding a psychotic horse through a burning barn. Just when it looks like they are ready to fall into a bearish abyss that confirms the warnings of the asset class’s high-profile opponents, they explode higher. Warren Buffett and his cohort Charlie Munger have called cryptos “financial rat poison squared” and “disgusting and contrary to the interests of civilization.” Like all markets, cryptos look great on the way up and awful on the way down. As they rally, they validate the growing number of supporters adopting the asset class’s libertarian ideology that removes control of the money supply from central banks and governments and returns it to individuals. The incredible volatility only exacerbates the emotional responses. In May and June, Bitcoin and Ethereum looked ugly. ...

By the end of next year, at least five countries will have accepted bitcoin as legal tender, the CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Bitmex has predicted. He cited three key reasons why he arrived at this conclusion. “Developing countries will jump into crypto in 2022,” he said. More Countries Will Adopt Bitcoin as Legal Tender The CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Bitmex, Alex Hoeptner, has predicted that developing countries will lead the way in bitcoin adoption. He detailed last week: My prediction is that by the end of next year, we’ll have at least five countries that accept bitcoin as legal tender. All of them will be developing countries. Here’s why I think developing countries will jump into crypto in 2022. The CEO offered three main factors driving the adoption of bitcoin in developing countries and why he came up with this prediction. The first is remittances. Remittances made up 23% of El Salvador’s GDP in 2020, Hoeptner described. Citing data from the World Bank, he added that low ...
